Dear Jim, I still miss you so but my life is finally settling down. The first two and one half years were not easy. Max is still with me and I have a new baby English Golden Retriever named Lily, just like we talked about. You would love her too. Max is almost 9 now and is failing somewhat, but he still likes to take walks. I have done some traveling, but not the trip to Africa yet, but it is still in my plans. I have a new man in my life. He’s very good to me and we are falling in love. .Believe me though, no one will ever replace you, but we both knew I would need to move on and share my life with someone else. I feel you would approve of him. It is with sadness that I write this. I will always miss you and remember all the great times and soft moments we shared. You were one terrific man! I hope heaven is going great and that you and Bob and Joe are getting in a lot of golf games. If I know you, your score is excellent. God has blessed both of us and always know, that you are in my heart. Love, Jan .

Jim, Today it is one year since you passed away. I still miss you very much but now I think more of all the wonderful times we spent together. It is Easter and Christ rose from the grave today but I know you cannot do that. I know you are in his arms though. Soon I will be taking your ashes to our special place. Keep watching over us and always know that I love you very much.Jan.

JUST FOUND OUT A FEW MINUTES AGO THAT JIM HAS PASSED AWAY WHEN I WAS PHONING TO FIND OUT IF HE WAS COMING TO OUR BI-MONTHLY LUNCHEON MEETING OF THE MIT BEAVERS AT THE CHEROKEE GRILL THIS COMING TUESDAY. AT THESE LUNCHEONS I MET JIM SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE YEARS AND WAS IMPRESSED THAT HE WAS STILL PRACTISING ARCHITECTURE EVEN THOUGH MANY OF HIS ’43 CLASSMATES OF THE “BEAVERS” HAD RETIRED.. ALTHOUGH HE HAD NOT BEEN ATTENDING RECENTLY AND HAD ASKED US NOT TO CALL TO REMIND HIM OF THE LUNCHEONS, I CAN NOW UNDERSTAND WHY HE DID SO. ON BEHALF OF THE OTHER “BEAVERS”, OUR DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO ALL OF JIM’S FAMILY. HE WILL BE SURELY MISSED.

I have many fond remembrances. Sailing, skiing, simply watching him draw things. Uncle Jim led a remarkable life and was my idol as I was growing up. He was the first, I believe, on the Johnson side of the family, to earn a professional degree and recognition for his work. I regret that our paths did not much cross in later years. Jim will be missed.

I was the middle one – first Tom, then 16 months later, me-Naomi, then Jim, 15 months after me. Jim was a consistently A student all through his school years. In those days schools did not have football fields, tennis courts or swimming pools, but Jim filled in his time with skiing and sailing and playing the French horn. We made him open a window and point the horn out to try to decrease the noise. He earned money by being a golf caddy and working for a land surveyor. After high school, Jim commuted by streetcar to Massachusetts Institute of Technology to pursue a 5-year degree in Architecture. He paid all expenses himself with a combination of scholarships and loans.. He graduated during World War 11, I think about 1943 so went immediately as a Captain into the Army Corps of Engineers. He was sent to Portland, OR to do topographical work. The others in the office were all from Walt Disney studios. Then he became part of the OSS, now called CIA, and sent to Catalina Is. for behind-the line training. After that, he was sent by thr State Dept. to design the building inside for the Nurenburg trials of the Nazis. When the war was over, he went back to MIT on the GI Bill for another 2 years to get a degree in engineering and a master’s in Architecture. Upon finishing, with a straight A record for 7 years, he was asked by MIT to stay and be one of their professors, but he was eager to get out in the world and do his own designing. He chose Denver because of his love of skiing. He was an honest, hard-working man who enjoyed life and received the news of his prognosis with more bravery than I have ever seen I wish the best for his wife and children.

Jim Johnson was my father, my teacher, my friend, and the greatest man I have ever known. He loved people and spent his entire life as “Jim Johnson…..Architect” creating buildings and spaces in an effort to make the world a better place. For the record, he succeeded! My relationship with him was special beyond words, so many memories of wonderful times spent together on boats, the ski hill, or just enjoying each others company over a giro sandwich. Through him, by example, I learned what it means to be a good person, to see the humanity in everyone, to act with integrity, and to be honest and compassionate to those around me. So many things that make me who I am are because of him. He was someone special to so many people! Pile up the love people have had toward him over the years, combine it, and the total would only be a small fraction of the love I have for my Dad. As sad as this time has been for me, in the end, I will smile and think about how lucky I am to be Jim Johnson’s son.

Sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. We last visited at his office building as I felt he had come to see me. Whether or not that was true, he made me feel that way. He always treated me and anyone around him with the same respect given to a king. He was gracious to take me golfing at his club and I think he knew how special that was for me. He also conducted business in the same fashion. There are very few men like him left on this earth. The funniest story I tell about Jim is when I was telling him about an upcoming trip to the islands. He said “While you’re in the neighborhood you should stop by Japan.” He was so full of life! I truly will miss him.
