Obituary of Lanning Likes

Lanning E. Likes passed away July 18, 2019, in Denver Colorado. He was born in Lamar Colorado on May 20, 1944, to Dr. Edwin C. Likes and Juanita Likes. He is survived by his 2 brothers, Tom Likes and Greg Likes of Lamar Colorado, 2 nephews, Hillary Likes of Pueblo CO and Ashton Likes of Denver CO, and 1 niece, Carrie Harrison of Denver CO. He also had a grandniece, Daisy Harrison, and a grand nephew, Holden Harrison whom he loved dearly. After graduating from Lamar High School in 1962, Lanning attended college at Tulane University, Southern California University, and finally received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Denver. He began studying for a law degree but stopped just short of it to start his own business. He owned and operated the Silver Slipper Saloon in Central City CO from 1968 until 1978. He then became a licensed stockbroker and worked for First Financial Securities in Denver for 10 years. Then he went into his own financial services business which included researching and writing a manual for entrepreneurs that guided them through the process of building a professional business plan for presentation to investors. He was also very active in the neighborhood organization and helped establish the Clements Historic District in Denver. Lanning loved to learn and enjoyed a good long conversation. He would always surprise you with how much he would know about a whole range of subjects. He also had a big heart and he would drop everything to help any family member or friend who was hurt or in need. One of the highlights of his life was meeting and working with several off-road Baja racing organizations, including Walker Evans. Even though he wasn’t a driver himself, he loved the whole experience and came away with many stories to tell. A celebration of life memorial service/wake will be scheduled and announced at a future date. His ashes will be scattered in Baja. Lanning will live in the memories and hearts of the people who knew and loved him. He will be missed greatly by all.
