Obituary of Darilyn Brown

Darilyn Awes Brown, born in San Diego California to Frank and “Margy” Awes on November 28, 1934, passed away on January 21, 2012 from a heart attack. Predeceased in death by daughter Elizabeth “Alison” Brown, and former husband, John Sidney Brown III. Darilyn is survived by her sister, Dianne Bartlett, daughter, Caryl Aileen Brown, son, Alan Sidney Brown, and three beautiful grandchildren, Altan, 6, Allie, 4, and Jack, 2. During her childhood, Darilyn’s family moved to Marysville, California in 1947, before settling in Denver in 1950. There she attended East High School and developed her amazing musical talents playing the piano and organ. She graduated 5th in a class of 1300 students and was awarded the Joint Honor Scholarship to the University of Colorado at Boulder, she earned a B.A. in English. She also had a brief glory as a ski racer (which ended with a broken leg during a race in Alta, Utah) and enjoyed membership in the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. She married John S. Brown III in 1958 and became of proud mother of three children in Littleton, Colorado. She often stated that “some of her happiest days were barefoot and pregnant.” Darilyn led an active lifestyle and introduced her children to numerous sports and activities including swimming, tennis, horseback riding, bowling, ice skating, skiing, camping and hiking trips. She also enjoyed playing Bridge, participating in church choirs and playing the organ for many churches around Denver. She furthered her musical studies with a B.A. and Masters Degree in Music at Metropolitan State College. She even had partial ownership of a race horse. Darilyn will be remembered for her lifelong love of the piano and organ. She charmed all with her abilities. However, she will be most remembered and missed for her generosity, loving kindness, patience, and forgiving nature. These noble qualities were evident in her devotion to family, friends and those less fortunate. Her appreciation for the intangible, simple things that make life worth living are the most valuable lessons she taught by example. A memorial service to honor and celebrate her life will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 1, at Christ Episcopal Church, 2950 South University Blvd. In Lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the St. Francis Center of Denver or the American Cancer Society.
