Only yesterday did I learn that Pete had passed. I’m a fellow 1958 graduate of Fort Collins High School and Pete was one of my closest friends in high school. We remained close during college and I visited Pete when he was back at Northwestern.
We kept in touch while he was in law school and I was in medical school, both of us in Denver.
Prior to starting our professional studies, Pete and I took a never to be forgotten road trip starting in southern Cali and extending al the way to Seattle and the worlds fair in 19)2.
I remember Pete and I having spirited conversations about the relative challenges of medical and law school and which was more difficult!
It was my privilege to know the entire Willis family well. I also met Rosemary and my late wife Janice knew Pete and Rosemary as well.
I’m not sure when I last saw Pete. I headed to the University of Nebraska to complete a residency in Orthopedic Surgery and from there moved to Oregon where I’ve practiced in the mid Columbia region since. My wife Janice died in 2013 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. I mention that because Pete was my pick for best man at my wedding.
I only learned of my dear friend Pete’s death thanks to the news letter sent out to our class of 1958.
It is a deep regret that I didn’t keep in touch with Pete and his family. Sadly it seems death is what draws us back together again. My condolences at this late date to Rosemary and family. Also I have a fond memory of his “little sister” Ellie and how she seemed to obviously idolize her big brother.
I hope this reaches all those related to Pete and that out of the past comes a note from one of his best friends way back when.

Peter was always someone who smiled easily, gave you encouragement in every conversation, made you feel instantly welcomed and always took the time to have a conversation and ask how you are doing. He was one of the good guys and my heart goes out to you and your family during this time of remembrance.

I knew Pete a long time and most recently by sitting on the CJI Board with him. What a thoughtful and decent person! He exuded warmth and was always welcoming. The Colorado legal community has a great loss with his passing. My condolences to his family. Mark Fogg.

Pete was an extrordinary individual, highly respected and loved by everyone who knew him. I met Pete toward the end of his tenure at QWest and just prior to his joining Kutak Rock, and he was a wonderful addition to the Firm. I was so fortunate to talk with him just ten days ago and to have the opportunity to relive with him some of those times, He was involved in so many charitable and other organizations, but I most appreciated his significant contributions and commitments to the law school at Denver University (now the Sturm College of Law). He assisted and mentored a generation of law students and young lawyers, including my daughter Lyndsay, who joins me in this testimonial. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his wonderful family, and particularly to Rosemary and to his son, Mark, who was one of my partners at Kutak Rock before I retired. Pete’s life was truly a life so well lived and he will be greatly missed by so many.

I have been proud of my dear Peter D all of my life — and it continues. I am most grateful to have been a part of his life and of his precious family.
So many great memories of fun times, wonderful old family stories, well-meant advice given to his little sister, frustrations when I lost card games to him and wonderful hugs accompanied by that great beaming smile.
It is not all bad— I know you are with beloved family in Heaven AND now I can safely tease you by posting baby pictures of you — or as Mom and Dad would say, their little curly top DD!
Brother Pete, I already miss you calling me Sis!
Much love! Swister Ellie (Ruth Ellen Willis)

I first met Pete when I was offered a job in the Mountain Bell law department shortly after Pete joined, when I wanted to talk to someone who had recently joined to learn more about what the practice of law was like at Mountain Bell. Working around and with Pete I saw a man with the highest integrity. Pete was an extraordinary person. In some ways he mentored me, but mostly he was there to council when needed. I knew I could always count on Pete and once when I had to call him for some help with an issue my son had gotten himself into, Pete immediately responded and helped.
We would play tennis some times after work at the health club across from the office. Of course he would regularly beat me and then we also began to play golf together. At least in that sport I stood a chance of beating him and taking one to three dollars from our bets. His golf trips with his sons was something he talked about often and I tried to get him to come out to Oregon and play Bandon Dunes with them and me. Sadly now I won't be able to do that now with him.
He always talked about his family and how proud he was of his two sons and his daughter and of course the grandkids. And, his love of Rose was evident in everything he said about her and their relationship. Pete was also very open about his faith and I know that today, he is with his savior and Lord. But, he is deeply missed.

I met Pete through his daughter-in-law Kim's family, and we became friends over golf, the occasional dinner and a cold day at Mile High watching the Broncos. Pete has been an amazing person, full of joy and goodwill toward others. I witnessed Pete's hole-in-one during one of our outings at the Highlands Ranch club, and have the photos in a slide show on my computer desktop. What a wonderful family, a tribute to a wonderful man. Pete, we will remember you and miss you, but we rejoice to know that you are with our Lord. - Nelson Eagle
