Obituary of Joyce (Joycene) Stallcup

Joycene Stallcup, 88, passed away Jan. 3, 2020, at the Villas at Sunny Acres in Thornton, Colo., after a full, long life. A celebration of life will be held Friday, Jan. 10, at 10:00 AM in the dining room of the Lakeside building at The Villas.

Joycene was born in Oklahoma to parents Mary Joyce and Lionel McGoodwin. She was raised in Oklahoma and Fayetteville, Ark., where she graduated high school.

She went on to graduate from Drury College in Springfield, Mo., where she met Allan Stallcup at a Sunday school function. They married in 1953 and went on to raise three sons. They lived in Lawrence, Kan.; New Orleans, La., Oklahoma City, Okla., and settled in Albuquerque, N.M.

In Albuquerque, Joycene taught school before joining Job Corps where she counseled young people, helping them achieve their goals.

After retirement, Joycene and Allan made time for a love of traveling, music, good books and food. They moved into their fifth-wheel trailer, full-time, traveling for seven years throughout the U.S. and volunteering at U.S. National Parks from Arkansas to Alaska. She collected handmade glass paperweights and good friends along the way.

After Allan's death in 1997, Joycene continued her fifth-wheel adventures for a couple years, then traveled farther afield into Germany, The Netherlands, Scotland, and Ireland.

For the last 20 years of her life she made her home in Thornton, Colo., at The Villas at Sunny Acres. She adopted the staff and residents there as her extended family, and she loved the life she was able to build with them.

Joycene is survived by sons Mack (Valerie), Michael (Jill), and James; grandchildren Teodoro, Katherine, Laura, Isaac, and Adrian; niece Brenda; many loving cousins; and the mother of her grandson Adrian, Alison Stallcup.

She was preceded in death by husband Allan, father Lionel ('Mac'), mother Mary Joyce, and brother Don.

The family asks that well-wishers donate to their preferred local hospice organization in lieu of flowers.
