Obituary of Joseph Dodson

Joseph Isham Dodson passed away on April 21, 2020 at North Suburban Medical Center in Thornton, CO due to complications from Covid-19. He was 81 years old.

 
Joe was born in Salt Lake City, UT on November 17, 1938 to Clem H. and Mabel M. Dodson of Fort Collins, CO. His boyhood was spent in the shadow of WWII at the family home at 400 Elizabeth Street, where the 4 J's (Jim, Jayne, Joe and Jon) made their mark on the local community. Joe was a paper boy for the Coloradoan, stocked groceries at Busley's Supermarket, was President of the 1st Baptist Church Youth Group, and he was an outstanding Boy Scout from Troop 82. He was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout and was chosen to make the Asian Airlift trip of 1956. Joe was flown, with 26 other American scouts, to Thailand, Burma, the Philippines, Japan and India. He was also awarded the 1956 Hornaday Conservation Medal by the Boy Scouts of America in recognition for creating a Scout guide book on soil conservation. Joe capped off 1956 as Student Body President of Fort Collins High School.
 
After graduating high school in 1956, Joe joined the Army and served in the 10th Special Forces Group Green Berets (Airborne) Bad Tølz, Germany. After an honorable discharge, Joe attended the University of Colorado at Boulder from 1960-64. Starting in 1965, Joe accompanied his parents to Bangkok, Thailand, where his father Clem was aiding soil conservation efforts with the Thai government. While there, Joe met and married his wife Wan-Pen and their eldest son, Dawee, was born in Thailand. After returning to the States, Joe attended the University of Denver, and was awarded an MLS, Master of Library Science. Three more children followed, and the family settled in Loveland, CO starting in 1973.
 
Joe is survived by his daughters Duranee and Dawnee, sons Dawee and Dutee; his five grandchildren; former wife Wan-Pen Kunze; and brother Jon Dodson. He is preceded in death by his father Clem H. Dodson, mother Mabel M. Dodson, sister Jayne D. Mattocks, and brother James M. Dodson. 
 
Due to current CDC restrictions, a military funeral will be conducted at a future date at Fort Logan, CO. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Compassus Living Foundation of Denver in Joe's honor.
