Obituary of Robert Elder Camp

Robert Elder Camp died peacefully on April 2, 2021 in Denver, Colorado. Bob was born on December 15, 1933 in Monroe, Georgia to the late Emory Camp and Lenira Elder Camp. He entered West Point on July 3, 1951 and graduated with the Class of 1955. Commissioned in the Field Artillery, his early assignments included Korea with the 2nd Division Artillery in 1962/3, Fort Benning, Europe in 1964/7 and Fort Leavenworth in 1968. He was next assigned to Vietnam in 1968/9 with the 2/320 Field Artillery in the 101st Airborne Division and then USARV. In 1971, he returned to Graduate School in Purdue, Indiana for a Master’s Degree in Engineering and then served 3 years at Combat Development Command. Subsequent assignments were to Training and Doctrine Command. In 1975, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel with 20 years of service in the US Army.

He then worked with Martin Marietta for 9 years in the Aerospace Division in Denver, Colorado. He quickly realized that Colorado was the state for him and spent the remainder of his life there. Throughout his life, Bob remained very active with his West Point class of 1955. He participated in all class skiing outings and luncheons in Colorado and he personally carried the class of ’55 flag for over 11 years, leading the ’55 ski club and always bringing the flag to class luncheons.

Bob was married to Aurelia Mary Parks Dominick and had 2 sons, Robert and Gordon. In July 2005, he married Cynthia Hymes who preceded him in death in September 2017. He is survived by his sons, Robert and Gordon Camp of Pennsylvania, and granddaughter, Faye Camp of Colorado.
