Obituary of Nancy Jane Long

Nancy Jane Long passed away on October 18th, 2021 in Lakewood, Colorado with her daughter Whitney by her side, at the age of 69 years, 5 months and 29 days after battling dementia for the final years of her life.

Nancy was born April 19, 1952 in Hayti, Missouri to Earl J. Long Jr. and Deane Johnson Long of Caruthersville, Missouri. Nancy grew up in Caruthersville and was a graduate of Caruthersville High School, class of 1970. She attended the University of Memphis and graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. She worked as a phlebotomist in Memphis, as well as in a plant nursery.

Nancy was a devoted mother who supported and encouraged her daughters to become strong women who stand up for what they believe in. She especially enjoyed watching Jordan and Whitney ride horses, traveling to different horse shows and being an exceptional “horse mom.” Nancy was an active member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Memphis, volunteering for years with the youth group.

Nancy was a good friend to all who knew her, including many 4-legged creatures she saved over her decades of volunteer work at Memphis Animal Shelter and Denver Animal Shelter. In addition to being a loving friend and animal lover, she was a purveyor of fun in all things, bringing smiles and laughter to light up lives around her.

Nancy is survived by her two daughters, Whitney Adsit Phinney and her husband Tim in Denver, Colorado, and Jordan Adsit Zimmermann and her husband Andrew in Boston, Massachusetts, three grandchildren, Sonny and Brennan Phinney and Sydney Zimmermann, a brother-in-law Donald Armour, two nephews, Devin and Cameron Armour, Jeb the Adventurous Turkey, as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceding Nancy in death were her parents, Earl Jr. and Deane Long, and her sister, Lucy Long Armour.

Graveside services for Nancy are planned for Friday, November 12th, 2021 at 1pm in Little Prairie Cemetery in Caruthersville, Missouri with Reverend Gary Matson officiating. H.S. Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
