I was going to write an e-mail to Jeff today regarding the Steely Dan song King Charlemagne and one his dorm-mates at Foster-Scholes dorm at Reed College named Chris B. We shared the early journey together at Reed College, and both left to attend the much more reasonably priced Evergreen State College.
We were housemates at Evergreen at 'The Green Mansion',, were members of the Foote Street Co-op, and enjoyed the Friday Night food breakdowns, with The Friuitland Famine Band.
With Farmer Sandy, Krazy Karla, Bosco Barb, Captain Coyote Sam, Mansion Glass Ken and Bill, Randy T, and the rest, Jeff was an integral part of the musical folks with his French Horn in our music room!
After college, I visited Jeff once in New York when he was going to Columbia [I most remember the large bullet hole in the window facing West], and once in D.C. on my way to FL.
We had kept in touch over the years, but I was shocked to see the Obit. today! So, don't be cliche today, and grtab the day!!

Jeff and I served in the Peace Corps in Morocco during the same time period:1976 - '79. He lived in Boujaad and I lived in Kasba Tadla, the town right down the road from his. I did not know Jeff during training but we knew of each other's existence. We were the only Americans in our respective towns in our first year.
One day I felt lonely and wanted to speak English other than the English I was speaking in the classroom. So, I took a bus to Boujaad and asked where the American lived. I knew that everyone in the town would know. I basically invited myself to Jeff's house. I remember that I got to his house probably a little after 1:00. We sat on the floor and talked non stop until dusk. We talked about our lives in America and what we missed. We talked about teaching in Morocco adjusting to the culture. We became best friends that very first meeting. Jeff was just that kind of guy. He knew how to make you feel welcomed and he was generally interested in you. I got to know his French friends in Boujaad and he knew my French friends in Kasba Tadla. We both stayed a third year in Morocco and we stayed at the same jobs. We met the Volunteers from the group that came after us and we developed long lasting friendships with many of them.
We were good traveling companions. This was not necessarily easy being I was a morning person and he was not. We came to an agreement that I would not awaken him when I got up early in the morning to explore our surroundings and he would not make me wait for him to get up before we left the hotel. I would go out looking for good places for breakfast and checking out the area. Then, I would come back, he would be awake, and I would tell him of my findings.
Later when we were both back in the States, we both happened to be in New York at the same time. He got to meet my wife Judy and we met his friends. We all got along famously. If you were a friend of Jeff's you were also a friend of his friends. We continued to keep in touch via Christmas cards.
When Jeff retired, he became a Stay at Home Dad helping to raise his two boys. He knew I was a Stay at Home Dad raising 3 kids and a Siberian Husky puppy. It is tough being a Stay at Home Dad. Guys are so used to working and they find that other men have a difficult time relating to them as Stay at Home Dad's. I think he was uncomfortable at first and I told him how much I enjoyed being a Stay at Home Dad. He became a great Stay at Home Dad and his sons greatly benefited from this.
I am truly blessed to have known Jeff and feel very fortunate that he was part of my life. I do have fond memories of him.

Our last visit with Jeff and Chris was the best. We arranged 3 days near Lake Wenatchee. Chris scheduled a raft trip down the Wenatchee River on a 90+ degree beautiful day. Jeff wanted the front row seat so sat on the bow riding the waves, smiling ear to ear. The guides allowed us to get out of the raft when we reached still water. Jeff was in ecstasy as he slid off the side of the boat into the cool refreshing river. Only problem was, with his MS, he wasn't much help getting back into the boat. Patrick managed to heft him in over and over again. Jeff never let the opportunity pass to slip back into the water. Every time, he got this look on his face...heavenly, ahhhh. Pat's back was hurting by about the 5th and last time we came to flat water. Our 100 pound guide chuckled as I said under my breath, "no, Jeff, no", but there was that glorious look on his face again as Jeff slid once more over the side of the boat, so happy, so relaxed. We will never forget that look and are so so grateful for that last wonderful visit. And also grateful that our guide jumped up to deftly plop Jeff back in the boat.
Pictures below were another wonderful trip with Jeff to the Rocky Mountains, August 2017. Love you so much, Jeff and Chris.

I'm Chris' sister, Jeanie. I didn't get to spend enough time with Jeff and Chris, as we mostly lived far apart. I did visit them in Guayaquil and Santiago, along with a few of my friends. We got to see Bennie as a small baby. Jeff was always a great host. He could always join in any conversation and know the topic and bring great insights to whatever you were talking about. He and Chris have had a good and happy life together with their kids, from what I have seen, and Chris and the boys miss him dearly. I miss his smile and funny quips and his presence in my sister's life.

Jeff was a great guy. When Mark and I saw him outside Denver a few years ago, he was still the upbeat guy we knew in Boujad. He wasn't drinking 17 cups of Nescafe or smoking his Casa sports the way he/we did back in Boujad. But despite the MS, he was a gamer. We hiked around in elevated surroundings, and got a nice panoramic view of Denver from our station. He only asked that we sit in the shade to counter the effect the heat had on him. Apart from that, he didn't miss a beat, including when we entered his house and had to go through the 2-minute "hello, how are you, thank God for everything, etc." drill in derija.
For those of us who knew Jeff, we were privileged. Our lives are better because of it.
Best wishes to the family. Your husband and father was a wonderful individual.

I enjoyed walking with Jeffrey in the prairie of Highlands Ranch in our visit to Colorado this year with my wife and little Jessie. We are strongly thankful to Chris and Jeffrey for their hospitality.
I was really expecting to continue the walks with Jeffrey in the next trip back. God had different plans for him. Now he is walking in heaven.

We met Jeff and Chris four years ago in southern France through our sweet host daughters mom Brandith, who is the sister Jeff. She had invited us all to this magical place for her birthday and we all spent a great week together. Jeff entertained us with fun stories of his adventures around the world. There was so much laughter, good food and interesting excursions during that week. We cherish the memories and are privileged to have known Jeff. Our deep felt condolences go to Chris and the boys ♥️ The pictures enclosed are from our stay at the Château Mérienne in Lavendoux, France

Jeff and I spent many hours together fishing (not always catching) and laughing together. Jeff was the consummate gentleman. A good listener, educated, always polite and spirited in conversation. I will miss Jeff’s company and will remember him fondly when ever I am fishing on the South Platte or Bear Creek.

Jeff was the first other "gringo" I met in Chile. We bonded immediately and soon his wife Chris and my husband Carlos Andrés joined in. Jeff had a giant heart only matched by Chris's golden heart. What a dynamic duo. We have fond memories of Sunday diners after church. Jeff would entertain our toddler Emily by pushing her around their yard in a cardboard box or playing in the freezing pool. We will always be grateful to remember the day they brought Ben home. Proudly we accepted the honor of being his godparents. We parted too soon when we decided to return to the States. Never for a moment did we stop remembering Jeff and Chris and their two boys. Never for a moment did we feel we would not be with Jeff again. Our hearts are aching because he was indeed special. But, we know Chris's strength and fortitude and love of life. We look forward to celebrating Jeff's legacy with Chris and Ben and Danny in the future. So much love to you all. Tracey & Carlos Andrés
