Obituary of Darlene Laverne Hall

Darlene Laverne Hall

Darlene Laverne Hall passed away quietly on May 1, 2022, in Denver, Colorado.   She had been yearning to see her parents and so she went. She was born in Speed, Kansas in 1924 to Minnie and Dow Selbe.  She was the middle child and had two siblings, Rex and Betty, both predeceased.  The dustbowl destroyed her family's farm in the 30’s and they lost everything.   They moved to Longmont, Colorado, where she married Donald Hall in 1945. For a few years, the couple traveled the United States living and working in New York and Florida before settling down in Denver where they built their first home on Cook Street and raised three children, Debby, Denise and Doug.

They owned two Dairy Queens and everyone in the family worked there at one time or another.  They also owned and managed apartments throughout Denver and Aurora.  In their spare time, Don and Darlene traveled all over the world with friends and especially loved Las Vegas, probably because they always won enough to pay for their trip. There were also many family vacations to visit relatives, attend the World's Fair, drive through Yellowstone and see the California Redwoods in all their glory.  In later years, they invited the kids and grandkids to cruise with them to Disneyland, Mexico and the Caribbean.

From the Model T Ford to the intricate technologies of cell phones and cable TV, Darlene had a good long life filled with love and sorrow, tragedy and triumph.  She was always up for a challenge, enthusiastic in the extreme and supportive to others in their endeavors.  She had a presence and filled up the room with her energy wherever she went.  We will miss her terribly.

Darlene was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Donald Hall.  She is survived by her children: Deborah Hall (and longtime friend Martyn Syme), Denise Proper (and husband, Jeff Proper) and Douglas Hall; her grandchildren: Luke and Jake Hall (and their mother Andra Hall), Julia, Jessica and Jonathan Proper, Flora Daniels, honorary grandchild Grace Syme; and her great-grandchildren: Parker and Harmony Daniels. Surviving nieces and nephews include Sherry Kaiser, Danny Miller, Susan Selbe, Scott Selbe and Cindy Selbe.

The service will be held on May 19th, 2022, at 11 am at Augustana Lutheran Church  located at 5000 E Alameda, in Denver, Colorado, Pastor Mike Lemke officiating.  There will be a viewing at 10 am before the service and a light lunch at the church following the service.  Flowers are welcome or please feel free to make a donation to the Diabetes Association.
