I had wanted to attend the celebration of life, but cannot, so I will share some memories. I knew Vince in high school and we were in a number of classes and clubs together. After high school we were house mates at a place we called The Martian Embassy. Later we were roommates in an apartment in Lakewood when we both worked swing shift at Denver Plastics. There are many stories from that era, but I think the term "feral geeks" covers a great deal of them. One regular event when we worked together was that on payday one of the errands was to the bookstore to buy two more Destroyer novels. Back at the apartment we would sit down to read and about two hours later, we swap books.
I've seen Vince maybe three times in the last 30 years. Once in Boston when we met him downtown and he showed us where he worked and then we went to a nearby pub. Next was at MileHiCon when they had moved back to Denver, and 10 years ago at our 40th high school reunion. I was really looking forward to seeing him at our 50th next month.

I remember how nice it was just sitting and chatting with Vince under the stars under the grapevine on the old patio. Those were such wonderful times in my life.

After reading Vince's obituary, we came to realize that he was an even more humble and amazing person than he ever let on to be.
While square dancing, we did not always have much time for visiting; however, I (Lenny) recall a great visit with Vince at a weekend square dance retreat, that I believe was at the YMCA camp in Estes Park? While taking a break from dancing, I sat outside with Vince. To me, he did not always seem to be a man of many words, but he was a great listener, and always had that understanding smile. Tamsen, I regret that I may still be out of state at the time of Vince’s Celebration of Life; however, I will be thinking of you, as well as fond remembrances of Vince.
No words can hurry what you are going through, but please know how much you are being thought about and how deeply we both wish you the gentle comfort of beautiful memories.
With love always, Lenny and Ken

This tribute was shared by Jacob. He took a video of a candlelight Memorial service that was performed by a number of members of our home square dance club, the Rocky Mountain Rainbeaus. The Memorial was performed at the annual International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs. They have a special room, where they honor members who have passed during the previous year. They hang the member's badge on a board. When Jacob sent me the link to the video, he said the following:
This video captured just a small number of the conversations folks were having about Vince during Convention this year. I didn't know him very well but lots of other Rainbeaus did--and they talked about what a kind, warm, and welcoming person he was. Just now Kelly and I were talking about Vince, and Kelly said Vince had a really incredible laugh. He added, trying to describe how much fun it was to be around Vince: "Jovial isn't the right word, and neither is exuberant....But he was just so...lively. No, lively isn't the right word...."
It makes me happy to know that people were talking about Vince and what a wonderful person he was.

I met Vince and tamsen while they were active with The Rocky Mountain Rainbeaus square dance club. I have danced with both of them, and will cherish the memories of sharing those great times forever in my heart. The club is grateful for the contributions that they both made by their membership in the club and their camaraderie with their Rainbeau family. Vince always had a smile on his face and gave such genuine hugs. This never changed, even in the later years when his health had declined. Such a wonderful guy to have known over the years. Vince will be missed, but the memories will live on forever. RIP my dear friend.

The loss of Vince is felt by so many. He was a part of your life which means a part of our family for almost 40 years. There wasn’t a family celebration where he was not a part even if unable to physically be there. We are honored to have all the wonderful memories of time together with him & our family. He will surely be missed.
On a little personal note from Angelle, Vince’s high SAT and math skills definitely were helpful to me as he tutored me thru college Algebra; very patiently I might add.
Tamsen – We know your heart is heavy and are struggling on how to move on, please know that Vince will always be in your corner as he always has.
James – Our condolences to you during this grieving time. You were Vince’s son (not stepson) in all that he referenced and felt and thus all we knew and considered.
Our hearts go out to all of Vince’s family and all that knew him.
Angelle and Thomas Walker

Now you've gone and made me cry, Angelle. Thank you for what you said to Jim. Vince did consider him a son, not a stepson. And I had totally forgotten that Vince tutored you when you were in college. You're right. Vince will always be with me. Thank you, Angelle and Tom.

Grace Holt (Vince's sister) wrote that somehow the photographs made the obituary more poignant. I, Tamsen (Vince's wife), wrote the following, for the rest of you:
I don't have a lot of pictures of Vince on my computer (yet), but somehow these seemed to represent him pretty well. I want to tell you what they mean to me.
The one in black and white was from the year I met him. That's when I fell in love with him. He was sitting in the "smoking room" at The House (the "commune" we met in).
The one where he's looking up at the camera, wearing the cap, is from the year we moved to New England, from Denver. We were in New Hampshire, leaf peeping. Being in New England was a whole new adventure for us.
The photo where he is holding Whimsy was taken in Boston, but when we were planning to come home to Denver again, after eleven years in Massachusetts - and it is also special to me because it reminds me that Vince is going to be with Whimsy again.
The one where we're dancing together was one of his all time favorite photographs (and mine too). We were so in love. We were dancing to our own music, lost in each other's eyes, not aware of anything going on around us, with almost a halo above us. It's just a very special picture.
