Well brother, today is the celebration of your life. Many people have gathered to pay their respects and share stories of affection for you. I wish I could be there, but obviously don't have the resources to be there. I've also been very sick for several days with a virus that's going around this area so am quarantined. I'm in bed and have been thinking of you all day, crying here and there. And even though I'm not there, I can feel the energy and the love from so many.
I'm still having a hard time believing you are gone and still cry often when I think of you. I hope that you'll not ever forget how many people loved you and considered you a great friend and certainly a wonderful and loving father. Hopefully, we'll be able to catch up on all the things we've missed when we meet again. I sure miss our phone conversations and the laughs we had.
Your girls, Shae and Pee Wee, love and miss you so very much; never forget that. And, I know Angie misses you as well, as many others do. Collectively, they've worked hard to put this 'Celebration of Life' together for you. I'm so proud of both of them.
Rest in peace brother. I love and miss you!
Until soon . . .
Your sis!
XOXO

HHHHHHEEEEEELLLLLLOOOOO BIATCH. That how my buddy Russ would always answer the phone when we talked. He will be sadly missed. We had a lot of fun times throughout the years, Pouder Canyon, hot tub parties, just plain parties, holidays like the 4th of July and just plain running around. Russ told it like it was and he did things the right way. I worked with him a few times installing windows. One time he had to install a trapezoid window about 2 stories high. The only problem was that there was only 1 ladder. I asked him WHAT? (you know the rest of the phrase). He said , I got this, just hold the ladder. I told him he was crazy and some other choice words. Haha. The window was bowing while he was going up the ladder. Long story is that he installed it all by himself. Russ loved what he did and he was excellent at what he did. Russ was the most organized person I knew. He was always neat and had all his ducks in a row. My wife Deb and I always had fun with their family and I will always remember that SEG on his face. He will be sadly missed. He was a great friend.

Oh Russ! ♥️ I will miss you giving me a hard time and me giving you a hard time right back! As I’ve sat and thought of you there was a particular memory that popped right in my mind. The first time you met Aspyn. It was a special moment to watch you hold her and coo at her and the smile on your face. Or the time you came to our rescue when Crystal and I were out clubbin and my car was stolen but actually wasn’t stolen and was hiding behind a semi! I’m so glad I got to share my life with you! You will be so missed! Gone but never forgotten! I’ll always be here for your girls! With all my love and condolences. “Mel” ♥️

Good ol' Russ aka Pops! as a few of us knew him in our days of the poolhall. It was an honor to know the Russ and the Messick family. At a time in my life I felt that I to was a Messick as well as Russ was a caring and generous man. We spoke about a lot of things when we hung out together to grab a cold one at our local watering hole.
Russ was an encyclopedia of construction knowledge, his woodworking skills were one of a kind. The man built you quality with his hands and provided you a service from his heart.
In 2008 it was hard to find work when a lot of us were getting laid off do to the economic times. I was working part time and had started my college career during this time. As an ironwork and shop fabricator out of work Russ always told me how he respected my work ethic as a young man. He respected it so much that he asked me to work with him on a few window installs until I was able to find a job in my field.
My father and I had an inclosed trailer that we used for hauling hunting gear around and we were getting ready to sale it. Man did Russ ever jump on us when that opportunity came as he love the dual axle 10 footer. He would alway tell my dad and I when we would stop into the watering hole that he needed to find something just like it. Well the time came and the deal was made. We helped him out on fabricating some ladder racks for him to put on it and man was he just the happiest man alive!
We unfortunately grew apart from each other once I graduated college, the watering hole closed down & I had a career opportunity in Salt Lake City UT where I currently live now.
Men like Russell James Messick "Pops" do not come around in young peoples life to often like it did mine. I am very honored to have known such a great person to have as a role model in young adult life. His family loved him and he loved his family. A quality that is hard to find these days.
I hope the Messick family grieve softly losing a great Dad, husband, grand father, brother, uncle. I know that here in Utah we grieve with you as we remember Russ. We are saddened of the news and hope that our kind words find you with open arms & some happiness.
Rest easy "Pops" I ask that you look down on us as we carry your memory in our hearts.
