Obituary of Layne C. Bro

In Loving Memory of Layne C Bro

January 23, 1969 - January 16, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving father, husband, and pillar of strength, Layne, on January 16, 2024, after a courageous and heartbreaking battle with glioblastoma. He was just 54 years old.

Born with a keen mind on January 23, 1969 in Kansas City, Missouri, Layne grew up in Carmel, Indiana until he left home at 19 for San Jose, California. There he served the Bay Area’s Spanish-speaking communities for two years as an LDS missionary—loving the people, food and culture. In 1990 he began his studies, first in business at Brigham Young University while working in campus IT, and later earning his Masters in Privacy Law at Albany Law School.

In 1993, Layne married his best friend, Heather, in Washington DC and spent the next 30 years dedicating his life to the well-being and happiness of his family, leaving behind a legacy of love and unwavering commitment. As a father, Layne was the embodiment of selflessness and devotion. His three incredible children, Brickelle, Cayden and Hadley, are each a testament to the values he instilled in them—love, kindness, and the importance of family. Layne was their best friend and confidant, always present to listen or offer guidance that will continue to inspire, challenge and comfort his children. Or just make them laugh.

Layne’s favorite pastime was being anxiously engaged in his children's interests—attending school plays, cheering at and coaching soccer games, and poolside for swim and dive meets—from the Colorado pitch to the London and Rio Paralympics in 2012 and 2016. His genuine interest in their lives created a bond that will forever remain unbreakable.

His dedication to family extended beyond the walls of their home. Layne was quick to be there for others, serve neighbors, mentor the next generation and make the world a more inclusive place.

Layne loved applying his learning and clarity of thought to the most challenging problems in his career, with his teams and in life. This was matched only by his ever-present signature sense of humor that made difficulties less daunting and eventually the unbearable somehow humorous.

He is survived by his wife Heather, children Brickelle Bro, Cayden Bro & Emily Peterson, and Hadley Bro; pet Clio; parents Charles & Dorothy Bro, siblings Darren & Becky Bro, Galen Bro, and Hayley & Ben Edgson. Special thanks to his team at Google and all who selflessly provided care.

Layne leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a profound sense of genuine family values that will continue to inspire us all. In his memory, we ask you to celebrate life and

be present with those around you. In lieu of a service or flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Layne’s honor to cancer research or marginalized communities where you are.

Admittedly, Layne would like this obituary more if it wasn’t void of levity, so we offer this:

Do you know what’s funny about cancer? Not a damn thing.
