Dave Varner
Unfortunately, because of a pre-planned vacation, Denise and I am not able to share in Dave’s life celebration in person.
I met Dave while we both worked at Lewan & Associates back in the mid-80s. I quickly witnessed his dry sense of humor and his infectious laugh, which I call the “Dave giggle”. We played Softball, Volleyball, Horseshoes, Golf and of course fishing over the years together. Just prior to Covid, Dave and I traveled to Montrose Colorado and fished the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. What a great time! Dave even taught my grandson how to fish. As how I was teaching him, and I quote Dave, “wasn’t even close to correct. “Which he added with his Dave giggle.
Dave also loved to Ice Fish. We would all go up to Wolford Mtn Res each year. We would fish, camp, ATV, play cards and just have a great time. Dave would always be leading in the total fish category, (no matter what Danny says)
A few years back, we really got into them, and as we normally did, everything was a bet. First Fish, largest and most. The fisherman with the most caught would get the winnings. One outing, I had caught 30+ Fish, but Dave was into the 90+s! awesome time!
During one trip, late in the day, we were all just talking, laughing, having fun and enjoying numerous adult beverages. I had moved away a little too far from my pole that was in the ice. And we all hear a Plunk! My whole rod and reel, went through the ice! Everyone was laughing, except me. I proceeded to pout for the next half hour. Then, all of the sudden. DAVE gets a hit on his line. He sets the hook, he thought, He starts to reel it in, and something is different. Dave is looking in the ice hole and sees what he has caught was my line. Which has a fish on it. He reels it in farther and sees my pole, and completely stops! At this time, I am looking into the hole. Telling him “reel it in you have my pole” He says “I know I do, and it has a fish on it!” I say, “great reel it in!” He pauses, looks at me with that famous grin of his, and says, “Is it MY fish or yours?” We all laugh as Dave will not reel it in unless he gets the FISH! I say, “you can have the fish! Just reel my rod in!” he laughs, we all laugh. He reels it in laughing the whole time. Great memories that I will never forget.
Dave’s sense of humor was a witness in how he was brought up. He spoke fondly of his upbringing and his love of his Mom, Dad, Brothers and Sister. He would tell us how he and his siblings would tell everybody how they were InVARNERable! when they were kids. That’s so awesome!
Dave and I would always bet a six pack on the Michigan/Wisconsin games every year, weather it was Football, Hockey or Basketball. I will raise my glass, toasting Dave every time they play each other from now on. We all lost Dave way too soon. He will be greatly missed; he was a great friend. I miss him.
